Big names in retail are in the spotlight this week as Wolverine Barcode IP, LLC has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Amazon.com Services LLC and Best Buy Co., Inc. The case, brought by Ramey LLP, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, Midland/Odessa Division.
At the center of the dispute is U.S. Patent No.9,280,689, which covers a “Method and Apparatus for Doing Offline Commerce Transactions.” In simple terms, the patented technology provides a way for retailers to process transactions without needing constant internet access—an innovation that's especially useful in places with spotty connectivity or when backup systems are needed.
Wolverine Barcode IP, LLC claims that both Amazon and Best Buy are making use of this patented technology without authorization. By filing this lawsuit, the company aims to protect its intellectual property and hold two of the world's largest retailers accountable for infringement.
For Ramey LLP, this case is part of its ongoing mission to stand up for inventors and businesses whose innovations may be at risk. The firm is seeking relief on behalf of Wolverine Barcode IP to ensure the patent is respected and properly enforced.
